The Reverend Steven R. Smith
Our Rector, The Rev. Steven Smith has served Ascension since 2009. His passions are preaching, mission work with people near (in Munich especially with refugees and the incarcerated) and far (especially in Africa and in Romania), and serving the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe. Rev. Steve came to Ascension from New York City, where he served as missioner at Trinity Church, Wall Street, associate rector for mission at St. James, Madison Avenue, and assistant rector and director of the Neighborhood Center at Holy Trinity, East 88th Street. Rev. Steve has a master's degree in divinity from Yale University, a master's in Christian ethics and mission from General Seminary, a law degree from Boston University, and undergraduate degrees in politics and American history from the University of Utah. He also did doctoral studies in missiology at General Seminary. In the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, Rev. Steve serves on the Bishop's Council of Advice, the Strategic Plan Committee, and he has three times been elected as a deputy to the Convention of the Episcopal Church. He also has served on the Convocation's Youth Commission, Canons Committee and Disciplinary Board. Rev. Steve was ordained in 2002; prior to ordination he was a lawyer in Los Angeles.
